Homemade Body Butter with Shea and Cocoa Butters are downright addicting

Now that we’re finally heading into Winter here in LA, I thought it was the perfect time to make some more body butters.  My baby girl decided to help me this time so that was an extra dose of fun!  I used the same recipe as the batch I made in August but used some different essential oils.

DIY Whipped Body Butter

  • 1/4 cup of unrefined shea butter
  • 1/4 cup of raw unrefined cocoa butter
  • 1/4 cup of extra virgin, unrefined, cold pressed coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup of Almond oil
  • 8 drops of Young Living Bergamot Essential Oil
  • 8 drops of Radha Beauty Lemongrass Essential Oil
  • 4 drops of Radha Beauty Eucalyptus Essential Oil

The 2nd batch we used 8 drops of Young Living Frankincense, Orange and Lavender Essential Oils.  The next batch I’m going to play around and maybe add less cocoa butter because the aroma kinda took over the essential oils.  I didn’t mind so much but I just want to see the difference if I add more essential oils and less cocoa butter.

You can use a double-boiler or a pot and a metal or glass bowl.  I used a saucepan and a silver mixing bowl.  Add all the ingredients (except essential oils) into the mixing bowl and place it over the pot filled ¼ the way full with boiling water.  Turn the fire to medium-low heat, and slowly melt the oils until its nice and hot (not boiling).  Don’t heat too long or you’ll destroy the nutrients in the oils.

Once the oils are melted and mixed together, remove from the burner and place in the freezer on top of a pot holder and allow to cool and return to a solid (not hard) form. This takes about 15-20 minutes. Don’t freeze the mixture. OR you can place it in the refrigerator for about an 90 minutes.  Your preference.

Once solid-looking remove from the freezer. Use the whisk attachment on your mixer, whip the mixture on speed 3 for just a little bit to soften then add in the essential oils.  Continue to whip on speed 3 until soft and looks like buttery whip cream (approximately 10 minutes).

Scoop it out and into your mason jar and Voila!  Store at room temperature in a cabinet.

I have yet to get the men in my life on board with the body butters.  They can’t seem to break the habit and convenience of using store bought lotions so I’m going to have to find some masculine scents that they’ll fall in love with.
