FLY MOMMIE FRIDAY – Menina Givens | Gemini

Tell us a little about yourself?

I’m loving life as a 47 year old empty nester! My husband and I met when we were 18 years old and we have been together ever since. It’s weird because our oldest son is 23… the same age we were when we got married and had him! I cannot even imagine him being married with children right now! LOL! I am a really fun and outgoing person and I love the outdoors and staying active.  I love to workout and stay in shape, it makes me feel sexy!  Some of my favorite activities are running, kickboxing and pole dancing.  I have built a very successful career as an Independent Sales Director with Mary Kay, Inc. for the past 23 years (21 years full-time) and am currently driving my 12th free car (9th Pink Cadillac).

What excites you most about Motherhood?

I have loved every stage of motherhood at every age but I especially love this age right now with my children.  Our sons are 23 and 20 and I love that we are actually “friends”! Our conversations are fun and even though they are adults I love that they still come to me for advice and counsel.

What is the one most important thing you hope to teach your kids?

I have always believed that it’s not what’s taught, it’s what’s caught.  As an entrepreneur, they have watched me reach many of my goals.  More important they have seen me miss goals time and time again and get right back up and try again. I hope that by watching me they have learned that quitting is NOT an option and that is is our responsibility to be successful.  When we are successful not only can we help others financially, but our success gives others permission to be successful as well.

What are some of your favorite things? Think Oprah lol

My favorite thing is having High Tea with girlfriends and going to the spa on a regular basis!

What do you wish you had more time for?

I wish I had more time to just SIT and BE!  My mind is constantly ticking and sometimes I wish I could just turn it off for a few days!  LOL!

What or who inspires you?

I am inspired when I see other women succeed in any area of their lives!  It makes me want to do more and become even better at what I do!

How would you describe your style?

I am kind of like a black swan…I look smooth, cool, calm and collected on the outside but underneath the surface I am paddling my butt off makin’ great things happen!

What’s one of your proudest mommie moments?

Oh my goodness!  Definitely watching my oldest son graduate from NYU at Yankee Stadium!  If I’m being honest we were afraid to send him there because it was a HUGE financial sacrifice and we didn’t want him or us to come out of school and be in debt!  I would constantly tell myself, we are going to make it through this and make it through all of these tuition payments! I would literally sit all the time and visualize us being in Yankee Stadium at his graduation. I played that moment over and over again in my head for 4 years while he was there and it happened just as I had imagined it!   Now he lives and works in N.Y., has an amazing job and hasn’t asked us for one penny!  Praise God!!!

What’s favorite recipe to cook for your family?

I lovvvvve to bake and am known for my honeybun cakes!

What makes your soul happy?

I love my doggie Bentley! I never thought of myself as a dog person, but dogs truly show what “unconditional love” really looks like! He makes me laugh and smile not sometimes but every time I see him!

Now tell us, what’s in your purse Fly Mommie?

Tinted moisturizer, Mascara and Lipgloss are a MUST and I always have an emergency $100 bill tucked in my wallet!

I have to be honest…I was pretty horrible with my skincare routine in my thirties but I have learned to not neglect myself now thank god! I’m not going down without a fight. LOL.  So what beauty brands do you use and what’s your beauty routine?

Since my mom was also in Mary Kay she taught me how to take really great care of my skin at the age of 13 so eversince I have washed my face everyday and every night with Mary Kay skincare products! I am BIG on taking proper care of your skin!  You can cover up everything on your body except your face…and you only have one face, so you gotta take great care of it! I use it ALL…age fighting cleanser, lifting serum, moisturizer, definitely products with SPF during the day, microdermabrasion or a skin peel twice/week and I NEVER go to bed with make-up on!  That’s a BIG no no! LOL!

What advice would you give your 18 year old self?

Have fun, don’t get too serious too soon about anything! Listen to your mom…it turns out she was right after all!

After feelings of self-doubt, fear or feeling downright depleted, how do you find your way back to center?

During these times I usually head to the beach!  It’s so important to take time for yourself, remember to breathe and remind myself that whatever I’m going through is just a small temporary situation to handle! My favorite saying that shifts me is “You’re allowed 5 emotional minutes in the day then you gotta be gangsta!” LOL!!! I also have affirmations that are in a sheet protector in my shower so that I can remind myself of who I am on a daily basis!  Faith comes by hearing and in addition to God we hear ourselves the most, so it’s important that we tell ourselves who we are and who we are becoming!

Do you have a mantra?

YES! Work hard and play harder! My primary need is fun and pleasure so I can’t just work, work, work without a reward. I work hard so that I can continue to finance my fun!  I love to travel!  Of course I take trips with my husband but I especially love trips with just me and the girls!

What are you most passionate about?

Without a doubt, I am most passionate about enriching women’s lives and helping them realize that they truly can have it all! It never has to be this OR that, it can be this AND that!  It’s so important to create, build and keep your own identity and continue to do the things that made you happy BEFORE you were a wife and mom.

Do you belong to or donate your time to any charitable/philanthropic organizations and if so, which ones?

Yes! Each year I love donating skincare and glamour products to women’s shelters and going in to do mini-makeovers with the women there. It is truly the best paycheck of the heart to sit and watch them smile because they feel pretty inside and out!

Menina is Fly in every sense of the word!  Look at this Beauty!  My lord!  Not only is she drop dead gorgeous, has a beautiful spirit, impeccable style, a bomb body, an amazing sense of humor and a luminous Glow, she is one of the baddest and most successful Mary Kay consultants in the game!  She’s Fly because she leads the way for so many women by being such an amazing example and inspirational force.

Anyone who knows Menina will definitely agree that her smile always precedes her which is just another confirmation of how much she loves life, loves people and loves her tribe.  Everything she does is centered around her desire to help people and enrich lives and I definitely think that is pretty damn Fly!  She has become a friend over the years and I can truly say I am inspired by her style, grace and true desire to see other women succeed.  There is no surprise she has led such a successful career in Mary Kay.  Great things happen to great people.

in love + light,

Angela René
